Livanjsko polje (Livanjsko Plain)
Enclosed by tall mountains of western Dinaric Alps, Kamešnica and Dinara to the west, Golija, Staretina, Šator to the northwest, and Cincar to the north lies one of the largest karst plains, Livanjsko Plain. Livanjsko Plain is significant for its peat soil (quagmile) unique to the entire system of the Dinaric Alps.
Because of flooding on one hand, and agriculture on the other, all settlements in this area were built on high ground along the edges of the karst plains to keep underground waters away. All streams feed into the large Buško Lake. Buško marsh is one of the plain's largest water reservoirs transformed into Buško Lake after the reservoir construction, which caused some disturbances to the eco-system regime and consequently the loss of many wetland and aquatic communities. Livanjsko Plain is significant for a large concentration of endangered, rare and endemic plants and animals. Wild horses are its extremely valuable asset requiring special protective measures.
