Lukomir ist mit seiner Lage auf 1455 m das höchst gelegene und eines der abgeschiedensten Dörfer in den Bergen Bosniens und Herzegowina. Das kleine Bergdorf liegt rund 40 km südwestlich von Sarajewo und befindet sich an den südlichen Ausläufern des Bjelašnica-Massivs und oberhalb des Rakitnica-Canyons. Der nächste Nachbarort ist rund 10 km entfernt und  nur über eine befahrbare Schotterpiste zu erreichen.

Die meisten Einwohner sind Hirten, die von den Produkten ihrer Schafe leben. Wer nicht überwintern will, verlässt im Herbst das Dorf. Denn im Winter ist Lukomir  komplett von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten.
