Kovačević was one of the most popular Partisan commanders. He was famous for his personal courage: one well-known episode happened on February 20, 1943 in Ostrožac on the Neretva River. With his Brigade commissar Dragiša Ivanović, in an unexpected encounter with a group of Italian tanks, he managed to jump on tank platform. With Sava on the second and Dragiša on the third of three tanks, they managed to destroy their crews and to capture one tank each. His heroic death made him into one of the Partisan icons.

There is no public transport to the place, but you can get a cab in Foča.By road
Savas' tomb is located near Tjentište, at Sutjeska National Park. If coming from Foča, take M20 road to Gacko. Just before arriving to Tjentište, turn right to Donje Bare. After 3.5km, you will find Savas' tomb.Tjentište - Foča - Sarajevo (107 km)
