Balinovac is a rocky peak in the Zavižan group of peaks, its southwestern part enclosing the Botanical Garden in Modrić dolac. Despite the relatively low elevation compared to the nearby peak Veliki Zavižan, the peak of Balinovac, due to its rocks, looks impressive when viewed from the Botanical Garden. Since the peak offers a view towards the sea, it is an attractive hiking destination. A climb to Balinovac is also interesting due to the fact that it begins in the Velebit Botanical Garden. This garden was established in 1966 by professor Fran Kušan, a botanist and mountaineer from Zagreb. A loop trail that begins at the small wooden hut enables visitors to see hundreds of plant species in half an hour of walking, including the endemic species of Velebit.

View: The peak offers a view of the sea, but also of all the peaks of the Zavižan group.

Seal: Metal seal is on the peak rock.

Getting there

Approaches:
  • Velebit Botanical Garden – Balinovac 30'
  • Mountain lodge Zavižan – Zavižanska kosa – Balinovac 45'

From the entrance to the Velebit Botanical Garden, we proceed along the meadow to the beginning of the loop trail around Modrić dolac. From the beginning of this loop trail to the signpost for Balinovac, the shorter route is along the right side (10 minutes of hiking; the left part of the trail is better option for return). The trail leading to Balinovac ascends steeply but shortly through the forest, to the pass between Veliki Zavižan and Balinovac, where we exit from the forest to a meadow. From the pass, to the right, it takes 15 more minutes of hiking along a steep bare slope to get to the peak. The markings continue from the Balinovac peak to the other side, following the ridge towards Zavižanska kosa and towards the mountain lodge Zavižan. However, this trail is demanding, and it is not recommended to inexperienced hikers. This attractive ridge trail across Zavižanska kosa is secured with pitons on two locations.
