Gromovača is the highest peak of Rožanski kukovi. The peak itself is rocky, but it does not leave the impression of being particularly high. A visit to Gromovača is interesting also due to the fact that the approach to the peak gives visitors the opportunity to see the most beautiful section of the Premužić Trail – a longitudinal trail constructed from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije, 57 kilometers long, passing through the most beautiful and the least accessible areas of Velebit. The section of the Premužić Trail passing through the otherwise completely inaccessible karst area of Rožanski kukovi is particularly impressive – clearly showing why this trail is rightly considered a genuine masterpiece of construction.

View: Gromovača is the best viewpoint of the magnificent stone labyrinth of Rožanski kukovi. A view of the sea is extraordinary too, and the peak also offers a view of the mountain lodge Zavižan in the distance.

Seal: Metal seal is built into the peak, a couple of meters east of the peak point.

Getting there

  • Mountain lodge Zavižan – Rožanski kukovi – Gromovača 2.45 h
  • Mountain hut Alan – Crikvena – Rossijevo sklonište – Gromovača 3.20 h
  • Tromeđa – Rossijevo sklonište – Gromovača 2.10 h

The best and the most attractive approach starts from the mountain lodge Zavižan. We first pass 2 more kilometers along the road leading through Zavižanska kotlina, to the signpost where the Premužić Trail branches to the right, leading towards Rožanski kukovi (45 minutes of hiking from the mountain lodge Zavižan). After 30 minutes of hiking, the trail enters an area with increasingly prominent karst characteristics, suddenly reaching the rocky area of Rožanski kukovi. One hour of hiking away from the road, in the middle of a stone amphitheater, we reach the memorial inscription dedicated to Ante Premužić, the designer of the trail. In 45 more minutes of hiking, the trail reaches the rocky area of Gromovača, and soon thereafter also the route branch leading to its peak. The climb is neither difficult nor dangerous, although it helps to use one's hands in some places to hold on to branches or rocks.
