Map / Vaganski vrh

Vaganski vrh is the highest peak of Velebit. The crown of the peak is actually a wide flat ridge covered in thick grass, so it does not leave the impression of being the highest peak. It takes around 20 minutes of easy hiking to reach the littoral edge of the peak, and this walk is worth taking for the view down the vertical rocks into the area of Velika Paklenica.

View: The view from the peak is oriented towards the region of Lika, and the site of Sveto brdo can be seen particularly clearly.

Seal: Metal seal is next to the marking of the peak.

Getting there

Approaches:
  • Entrance to the National Park – V. Paklenica – mountain lodge Paklenica – Struge – Vaganski vrh 7.15 h
  • Entrance to the National Park – V. Paklenica – mountain lodge Paklenica – Babino jezero – Vaganski vrh (Bukova staza) 7.15 h
  • Entrance to the National Park – V. Paklenica – mountain lodge Paklenica – Vaganski vrh (Lipa staza) 7.15 h
  • Veliki Vaganac – Veliko Rujno – Struge – Vaganski vrh 6 h
  • Bunovac – Vaganski vrh (the route from the Lika side) 3 h

Even though the traditional approach to Vaganski vrh starts from Velika Paklenica (along the trails Lipa staza or Bukova staza), it is worth bearing in mind that the ascent from Bunovac on the Lika side is shorter. A forest road 11 kilometers long leading to Bunovac begins in the village of Raduč, half way between the towns of Gospić and Gračac. Although the route is steep, it is also pleasant as it leads through shade. We pass the grassland valley of Cesarova dolina across the middle, strictly along the marked route. The route reaches the longitudinal trail along the peak ridge at the mountain pass above Malovansko jezero. It takes one hour and thirty minutes of hiking to get from Bunovac to the longitudinal trail. After that, it takes additional one hour and thirty minutes of hiking along this longitudinal trail to the right, to get to Vaganski vrh. One interesting hiking route option is the ascent from Veliko Rujno across Struge (there is a road in poor condition leading to Veliko Rujno from Starigrad Paklenica).
