With its shape, Veliki Kozjak is one of the most picturesque and the most attractive peaks of Velebit. Its vertical rocks attract attention from afar, adding to the beauty of the valley, and they can best be seen from Veliki Lubenovac. The rocks of Veliki Kozjak are also interesting for rock climbers, who can choose between several tens of available rock climbing routes with varying degrees of difficulty.

View: The view from the peak encompasses all major peaks of the central and northern areas of Velebit. The view of the forest expanses of Štirovača deep down is particularly impressive, together with the view of Veliki Lubenovac.

Seal: Metal seal is built into the peak.

Getting there

  • Veliki Lubenovac – Veliki Kozjak 1.30 h
  • Mountain hut Alan – Veliki Kozjak 2 h
  • Mrkvište – Vranjkova draga – Veliki Kozjak 2.30 h

The best approaches are those from Veliki Lubenovac and from Veliki Alan. Access to Lubenovac begins at Careva kuća on the Štirovača road. There is a gravel road section 8 kilometers long connecting this site and the edge of Veliki Lubenovac. We first need to take this road in the direction of Alan for a little while, and then we turn left, following the markings to a steep climb into the forest. The route cuts across the Alan – Lubenovac road on two occasions, passes next to Lubenovačka ruja, and, after 30 minutes of climbing, reaches the road that proceeds to Veliki Alan. There are two available options for climbing the peak. The more attractive, but also the more demanding option is to climb via Obli kuk. However, there is also a simpler route option, which enters the forest at the mountain pass with the road leading towards Vranjkova draga. A narrow path climbs to the grasslands of the western ridge of Kozjak, where we can see the rock of the peak. In continuation, the route proceeds in a semicircle, by following the ridge to the right and by bypassing a deep sinkhole. The route then approaches the peak from the southern side. The climb ends with an alpine climb section up the rock.
