Zavižanski (Veliki) Pivčevac is a conical forested peak between Jezera and Zavižanska kotlina. It was named after grouse (pivac or pijevac in the speech of Bunjevci). The special value of this climb is the crossing of one part of the wide grassland plateau of Jezera. This undulating plateau is approximately 4 kilometers long, and it was named after many water ponds retained at the bottom of sinkholes even until late summer, which made the entire plateau a valued site for cattle farming.

View: The bare peak rising above the forest offers a wide view of Veliki Zavižan, Mali Rajinac, Rožanski kukovi and Hajdučki kukovi

Seal: Box with the register book is on the peak, as well as the metal seal.

Getting there

Approach:
  • Mountain lodge Zavižan – Jezera – Zavižanski Pivčevac 1.30 h
  • Mountain lodge Zavižan – Vukušić snježnica – Zavižanski Pivčevac 1.30 h

From the mountain lodge Zavižan, we need to descend along the access asphalt road or along a trodden shortcut path east of the lodge for 10 minutes to the Zavižan road. We then hike along this road to the left for 15 minutes in the direction of Oltari, to the place where the trail for Jezera, Krasno, Pivčevac and Mali Rajinac branches to the right into the beech forest. This trail takes us through the forest for 20 minutes, bringing us to the grassland plateau of Jezera. In 10 more minutes, we reach Buljevac – a pass between Zalovačko bilo (1630 m.a.s.l.) and Zavižanski Pivčevac (1676 m.a.s.l.). This is where we come across an intersection of trails. The trail proceeding straight takes hikers to Krasno. The trail to the right of the Krasno trail proceeds to Mali Rajinac, and the trail to the right of the Mali Rajinac trail leads to Pivčevac. The route to the Pivčevac peak immediately enters the forest and ascends more and more steeply to the peak, in 30 minutes of hiking. One can also reach Pivčevac from the other side, along a marked trail leading from Vukušić snježnica on the Zavižan road (not far from the connection of the Premužić Trail and the road). The markings from Vukušić snježnica for Pivčevac steeply ascend through beech forest, and then even more steeply towards the end, until they connect with the trail from the direction of Jezera right below the peak.
