The walk requires a high level of fitness to cover 18-19 km and climb 1700 MASL. In addition, one part of the way -- a via ferrata -- is technically demanding.

The ascent to Hranisava via Djevojačke stijene begins in the village of Ljubovčići, at the Kraljevac lodge. A wide trail leads to Djevojačke stijene through the forest.

At Djevojačke stijene get off the trail, enjoy the wonderful view. Get back to the trail, continue towards Ždrijelo, where, some half an hour later a trail leading to the ferrata via Strugovi branches of the main track. Before taking on the scree you should prepare your gear (belt, helmet, ferrata set with two carabiners). Each step must be carefully planned as the rocks and the grass are extremely slippery. In several places pitons have been removed and the cable is rather slack, probably due to the rockslides. You can see the unused pitons along the last 50-metre stretch, but the ground is flat there and there's a trail on which you can walk comfortably. Still, you should be extremely cautious as the edge of the precipice is less than a metre away from the right hand side of the trail, and every slip could be fatal.

A little less than an hour after you set out, you reach the top of Strugovi, where you're greeted by a wonderful view of the plateau of Mt Bjelašnica. The peak Hranisava is an hour's ascent away.

The way back to Kraljevac is via a steep trail across the gorge. That side gets sunlight late in the afternoon, which is helpful in case you stay a bit longer.

Hranisava

Turn-by-turn directions

From the place you left the car head south over the old Yugoslav Army training range to Kradenik. Cross the stream and continue through the forest along the marked trail to the Kraljevac lodge. Continue south up the road leading to Hranisava via Ždrijelo. When you reach the Ždrijelo-Sajla junction, turn right and walk another hour till you reach the scree and the beginning of the via ferrata. When you get to the top, go southeast along the shoulder of the scrub, then across the meadow, uphill all the way to Hranisava. The return route leads over the saddle on the north-eastern side, along the road through the scrub, across the meadows and the viewpoint above Ždrijelo. Go down the grassy slope to the marked trail in the forest leading across Ždrijelo to the road to Kraljevac, on which you came.
