Kupreško polje (Kupres Plain)

Kupres Plain is the most elevated karst plain in the country. It has irregular shape and is surrounded by dynamic mountains. It sits at 1100 and 1200 m, stretching across 100 km2. In the northern corner of Kupres Plain stretches Plazenica Mountain, a dolomite complex and a hideaway for many endemic and relict plant and animal species, particularly dolomitophytes. A few meters away, there is a silicate bedrock with entirely different wildlife communities. Beside Kupres Plain, the Kupres area includes two additional smaller karst plains: Vukovsko Plain and Ravanjsko Plain. Mount Raduša rises above Vukovsko Plain at 1960 m.

To southeast of Kupres Plain at 1200 m sits Kukavičko lake, one of the most valuable areas in terms of both geo-morphology, hydrology, with a rich ecological and biodiversity. Around the edges of lakes typical peat soil or a low moor peat was formed which is very rare for this region and has a great ecological significance.
