A very interesting walk on Mt Čabulja with a wonderful view of the canyon of the river Drežnica from the top of a 1500-metre cliff.

Čabulja is a mountain in Herzegovina, some 20 kilometres north-west of Mostar. Its highest summit is Velika Vlajna (1780 MASL), whose northern face dips vertically into the canyon of the Drežnica river.

Departure is from the village of Bogodol. The southern face of Čabulja is bare and easily surveyable. If you take the road around 2km to the east of the marked trail, at 1400 MASL you will reach the marked trail agail. The trail from the saddle to the summit is well-marked.

At the junction, side roads branch off to Velika Vlajna, Bogodol, Kilava Bukva and Čuljak. This is where the road enters a beech forest, and there is a swamp not far. The area around swamp at the foot of Velika Vlajna is developed into a park of sorts. You can take a break there.

The final ascent, although not very long, is rather demanding, due to the large unstable stones on the trail that slide easily. It takes about half an hour more to the top. The cliff, over 1500 metres high, commands a wonderful view of the canyon of Drežnica. The return is the same way you came.

We didn't take the marked road; indtead, we went about a kilometre to the east. Go uphill to the north up the road. It's easy enough to find your way as there are no forests or scrubland. After a few kilometres you come out to a marked road leading from the mountain hut in Bogodol. Take that trail to the junction Dolovi, then to the peak Velika Vlajna across the Gondžuša bog.

Return the same way you came.

Bus or train to Mostar, then look for transport to Bogodol.

Kako stići do tamo?

Take Exit West from Sarajevo on M17 and drive to Mostar. From the city centre go east through the neighbourhood of Cim, and proceed to the villages of Sovići and Goranci. In Goranci turn left to Bogodol. Leave the car by the mountain house in Bogodol.
