Šator Mountain

Šator /Eng. a tent/ was so named for its shape with sharp steep hillsides inclined to karst plateaus resembling a tent. Mount Šator with its impressive altitude of 1.872 m is one of the highest mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To southeast it descends into a 200 m lower Mount Staretina, while to the south lies Livanjsko Plain; to the north there are wide karst plateaus, Tičevo and Preodac, and Glamočko plain to the east.

There are not many surface waters; however, a portion of cold mountain water plunging over the ridges of Mount Šator emerges in the form of permanent or occasional springs. Such is Šatorsko Lake, surrounded with different carbonate rocks, of which limestone and dolomites are dominant.  The lake has a surface area of 35.000 m2, average depth of 1,5 m and a maximum depth of 3 m. The lake experiences strong Mediterranean climate on the one hand and continental and warm continental climates on the other hand. The lake is a testament to a strong glacial period when glaciers descended down the Šator hillsides.

Mount Šator has great numbers of rare, endangered and endemic plants, particularly notable is a rare and medical herb Gentianalutea ssp. Symphyandraand, an endangered species of Leontopodium alpinum, which has been protected world-wide.
