This trail crosses Prenj from West to South.

This trail crosses Prenj from West to South. From the city of Jablanica, pass over local hills to the village of Ravna and follow the trail ending on an exposed ridge with great views on Cetina rock face – more than 1000 m high. It continues to a green mountain pass Medjuprenje where there are two mountain huts (one is always open). It continues towards Lucine valley, but turns East over Zakantar, a huge karst plateau and a natural habitat of the endemic Prenj salamander (seen only during the night and rainy weather). Zakantar will end below the amazing Tisovica valley which ends on the slopes of Prenj's highest peaks – Zelena Glava. Half an hour from Tisovica there is another mountain hut called Vrutak. The trail leads across Zelena Glava ( 2155m) and Otis summit ( 2093m), and continues to another valley and further to Bijele Vode ( White waters) where you will find another mountain hut and an old shepherd hut (Katun) which serves as a shelter. From BIjele Vode, the trail descends down towards Ruiste settlement and recreation area. Ruiste is a popular destination for Mostar citizens. There you will find two other mountain lodges, a hotel and a small ski center. From here you can get a lift to Mostar, call a taxi or continue towards Boracko lake.

Сигурносне информације

Some areas of Prenj are still suspected of landmines. This trail is safe; however, it crosses one suspected area of 500 m in length after leaving the road (over the meadow). The trail (and around it) is clear and safe, but you should not wonder around behind the marking signs. If you don't feel comfortable with this, stay on the road until you join the trail again.

Also there are a couple of other places (Zakantar spring and close by Vrutak hut) where landmines are suspected, but the area is cearly marked. Just respect these signs!

Watch for snakes and mind your steps because the terrain is very rocky.

Waether on Prenj is quite unpredictable. It is not uncommon that it snows during the summer and the temperature drops below zero.

121 - Call for Rescue. Also note that part of the mountain are not covered with mobile phone signal.

Cross the road in Ravna and look for the trail signs leading up to the woods. After joining the trail going to Cetina from Medjuprenje, turn left to take a break at the huts or continue towards Cetina and Greda to the left. On Greda (pass) go right. You'll find a spring at the bottom of the scree slope to the right beneath a rock when descending down towards Lucine. Past the newly built shelter in Lucine, turn left (east). At the next crossing towards Lupoglav summit, you remain on the trail (left, straight). Before the main crossing in Tisovica (you can see signage pole from distance) you'll join a trail going towards Vrutak, so go right there. The trail climbs up to Podotis and close to its highest point there is a crossing where you should go right. The trail to Zelena Glava and Otis will climb to the right and return the same way. If you don't want to climb Zelena Glava, continue straight (south). Keep straight all the way to Bijele Vode and beyond. After a couple kilometers on the old truck road in the woods you can turn to the left over a small meadow, but you can remain on the road as well as it will lead you to the same point. At the ruin look for trail blazings again, and follow it all the way to Ruiste. When you reach the main road again go left.

Good boots are a must. Protect yourself from the sun. Though many people drink regularly from the Prenj springs, the usage of water filters on small springs is recommended.

I Completed this section in two long days with an overnight stay at Meduprenje Hut. Jabalanica to Meduprenje took me around 8 continuous hours to walk. It doesn’t look far on the map but it’s a very steep incline and there were a couple of occasions between Jablanica and Ravina that I lost my way. Meduprenje hut has electricity, wood-burner stove and bedding materials. Water is kept in a storage container inside the hut so very convenient. If you contact the site manager Naid he will let you know where the key is kept. Meduprenje to Rujiste took me 13 hours! It’s a really long day of walking with lots of up and down sections. Signage is rare. Markings are frequent but often head off in different directions. I got lost twice which lost me an hour! I carried enough water at the start of each day so I didn’t have to look for places to refill. When I hiked in September lots of the marked sources were dried up.

I started in Ruijšte and did the trail in reverse. Bijele Voda hut was closed, but water was accessible. Bring purification or pills. Markings until Vrutak (spring nearly ceased) good, but than it gets a bit complicated, the way I walked: ignored the first sign and went to the second (old one) followed the sing (went left) to Lupoglav, when you find the first markings the get better and hit the track soon. Take the shortcut to Lucine shelter (not on the map) I met a local mountaineer and he told me they are currently resigning a lot of trail. The now about the confusing markings. I didn't take the shortcut and it was a really steep and dangerous climb to the shelter. After that follow the markings to Milanova Koliba / Meduprenje. Marking is quite OK but doesn't fit the gps track. Manged to arrive at Milanova Koliba just at sunset (12 hours of walking). Amazing place with spectacular views and nightsky. The old hut is open. There is water outside and inside the hut. And a fireplace. Descent next day to Ravna was steep but ok marked and overgrown. Gps doesn't always fit. From Ravna to Jablanica finding the trail (gps again didn't fit the markings in many places) wasn't easy and trail was overgrown and the heat was really bad. Short: one of the most rewarding stages so far (going north) but really demanding in terms of orientation. Also it's a lot of walking time you need, because the path is not always in good condition.

Beautiful Prenj mountain, exept really poor marking on some parts and staying on the trail was very tiring for me. Trail to Ravna: I tried to follow the signs as Jérémy recommended which was on some places quite hard because of many trails you come across and not really frequent signs on some parts. Also overgrown in some parts, I got lost few times, but I made it with some screams of desperation.😅 But I think still much better than the road and you get some pretty nice views on Jablanica. Trail to Milanova koliba (opened): very steep, I was dead when I came to the hut, some parts overgrown, thanks god it's in shade, plan to hike slow. Trail to Vrutak: on many parts trail is not visible, signed terrible (I think people who were signing it should take a lesson how to do it properly), needed 5h for it, you are constantly scanning with your eyes to find signs, very tiring for me because they say "stay on the trail because of mines" and you are constantly getting lost and are searching for a trail.😔 At Lučine shelter (opened, simple but nice, not on the map, on 13.2km, 2h from Milanova koliba) DO NOT follow the gps track (read a comment from Max to see why), but go back a little bit until you see a rock on a first photo and here turn right, in few meters you'll see a sign. By Vrutak hut is a small shelter (on photo) that doesn't look the best, you can't even close the doors properly. Trail to Rujište: signed good, you can hike fast. Didn't check shelter at Bijele vode, but hut was closed. Jezerce shelter looks nice. Agree with Max, I also needed just 25min to the Zelena glava peak, those "climbing" sections are not really climbing, at least for me. Did it in three days because I also went on two peaks off trail. 1st day: Jablanica-Ravna-Milanova k. 2nd day: Milanova k. - Vrutak-Kruna and Velika kapa (without a backpack, nice view on Prenj mountain, needed aprox 90min to the peak, signed quite good, you can find accurate gps tracks here: https://gorja.net/putopisi/201/pl-skloniste-vrutak-kruna-velika-kapa-pl-dom-rapta/) - Vrutak-Jezerce shelter. 3rd day: Jezerce-Zelena glava-Rujište-Boračko lake. Water: 2 full tanks at Milanova k, 1 full tank at Vrutak, just few liters in canister at Lučine, full well 2min before Bijele vode hut (on photo), half full well at Bijele vode hut, spring by Jezerce shelter. Mountain lodge Rujište closed, I called them several times in advance, but they didn't answer, the same story on their FB page, I saw a person inside, but the doors were locked, I didn't fell welcome there. I can confirm that food at motel is very good.
